GILDA ZELIN - FAMILY ORAL HISTORIES

NY Times Columnist David Brooks has reached out to readers over 70 years of age for "essays about their own lives and what they’d done poorly and well. They make for fascinating and addictive reading." http://brooks.blogs.nytimes.com/tag/life-report/.  Here is my comment on a submission by Gilda Zelin.

Gilda Zelin is a compelling voice for women linked to their family's intergenerational legacy. Widows, family archivists, and sharers of oral history... women such as Gilda remember their ethnic heritage as they live their own lives, create their own memories, celebrate their own joys, and push through their own losses. "Love of family and belief in yourself will help you help God untangle your knotted fate" is a quote from Gilda's presentation at the Writer's Journey Spring Salon of her mother Ida's story to her children and grandchildren about her emigration from her beloved Russia with her husband Jacob http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl5Y2if9chw&noredirect=1. Gilda's heartfelt commemoration of her famly's life stories are a shining example of that love, and by glimpsing into her story, we allow ourselves a deeper glimpse into our own.
